Bomb threat at Eagle Valley Elementary results in lockdown Monday

Students and faculty at Eagle Valley Elementary had an eventful day on Monday as Christopher Craig, 35, of Eagle Mountain was arrested after entering the school and making a bomb threat.

“At 2:13 pm, dispatchers with Utah Valley Dispatch received a call from a man who said he was at the school,” FOX 13 News reports.

Craig walked into the school wearing a mask and told employees to “Evacuate the kids and no one will get hurt.”

The man is said to be mentally ill, though it is unknown whether or not he is currently receiving treatment.

According to FOX 13 News, “After the threat was made, the release states, school staff locked the doors and activated school lockdown and evacuation procedures.”

Craig told officers and employees that the trunk of his car had explosives in it and that he was going to open it and set them off.

“He told dispatchers officers should keep their distance from the school,” stated the school’s press release. “He later told negotiators that he had a message he wanted to give them.”

“Craig agreed that, if he could share his message with negotiators, he would walk away from the car and let officers arrest him,”  FOX 13 News reports. “Craig was peacefully arrested and taken into custody, where he was booked on charges of threat of terrorism, a second-degree felony; interference with arresting officer, a class B misdemeanor; failure to disclose identity, a class B misdemeanor; disrupting operation of school, a class B misdemeanor; and disorderly conduct, a class C misdemeanor.”

Students were reunited with family members around 5:30 pm Monday night.

School resumed as usual for Eagle Valley Elementary students today, but the school is excusing absences of those students whose parents don’t feel comfortable sending their kids to school today. The school will be guarded by officers, counselors and security personnel to ensure student and teacher safety and comfort following such a traumatic experience.
